Dear food people,

If you’re visiting Thailand with your heart set on authentic Thai food, but you also want to make sure you’re spending your calories wisely, Kub Kao Kub Pla is a spot you might want to check out.

During my recent stay in the Sathorn area of Bangkok, I found their Central Embassy outlet just a short walk from my hotel. Central Embassy has a vibe that’s somewhat similar to Singapore’s Paragon mall, but it feels quieter. The selection of brands seems to attract a particular crowd, giving the whole place a more relaxed atmosphere.

BACKGROUND

“Kub Kao Kub Pla” translates to “dishes to eat with rice,” which is a fitting name that instantly reminds you of silky Thai curry gravies with rice or even mango with sticky rice.

The restaurant was founded by Atchara Burarak, who started Iberry ice cream in 1999. Since then, she has grown her business to more than 100 outlets across 13 brands, including Kub Kao Kub Pla, Ros'niyom, and Iberista.

She has also been recognised by Tatler Asia as one of Asia's Most Influential figures in Thailand for both 2023 and 2024. Atchara’s journey adds an extra layer of interest to what could otherwise be seen as just another Thai comfort food restaurant.

Kub Kao Kub Pla is known for serving classic Thai comfort food, especially dishes that are best enjoyed with steamed rice. The approach is straightforward and honest, focusing on well-loved flavours.

WHAT WE ORDERED?

I had been looking forward to trying their dishes even before this trip, but unfortunately, I didn’t have much of an appetite that day. We had an early dinner around 5:30pm, so the restaurant was not crowded at all.

I ordered the Chicken Pad Thai. The noodles were flavourful, with a pleasant light char and punchy seasoning, but nothing was overdone. The chicken was succulent, and the balance of spices made the dish easy to enjoy. It was a light meal, yet the flavours were well balanced and satisfying.

To drink, I went for their Iced Thai Milk Tea. It came as an ice-blended version, which was perfect for cooling down on a hot Bangkok day. The sweetness was not overpowering, so you could really taste the tea itself.

For dessert, I tried the classic Red Ruby. Each piece was plump and had a good crunch, paired with fresh coconut pulp. The coconut cream and shaved ice brought everything together, balancing the sweetness of the rubies in a really refreshing way.

The total bill for a main, dessert, and drink was just under 600 baht, which works out to less than SGD 25. It was great value for a central Bangkok meal.

THE VERDICT

Shiok Rating: 4 out of 5. Kub Kao Kub Pla truly delivers comforting Thai classics that are well-prepared and consistent in quality. The food is fairly priced, making it a great choice for both locals and travellers who want something reliable and satisfying. The menu stays true to tradition, so you will not find inventive flavours or unexpected twists, but that sense of familiarity is exactly what makes the meal enjoyable. There is a certain comfort in knowing you will receive a solid, tasty plate of food, without unnecessary frills or distractions. Often, the best dining experiences are those where familiar dishes are executed with care and confidence.

Vibes Rating 3 out of 5. The restaurant has a clean and inviting atmosphere. It feels relaxed yet polished enough for a comfortable dining experience. After a day of exploring the city, it’s the kind of place where you can sit back, unwind, and enjoy good company. What stood out during my visit was the genuine warmth of the service staff. They were attentive and helpful, offering thoughtful recommendations that made choosing what to order much easier.
